World’s First Racing Series to Use Riedel’s Private 5G Platform on a Permanent Basis as the Backbone for Transmitting Onboard Camera Signals
The new infrastructure enables the reliable transmission of high-resolution video signals directly from the race cars, with robust data rates even at top speed
The dedicated Private 5G network operates at a bandwidth of 100 MHz and achieves uplink data rates of up to 140 Mbit/s
Riedel Communications today announced the implementation of a groundbreaking private 5G infrastructure for the live production of onboard video in motorsports, developed in collaboration with the DTM and broadcast service provider TV Skyline. As the world’s first racing series, the DTM is permanently using Riedel’s Easy5G™ private 5G platform as its primary transmission system for onboard camera signals, thereby opening up new possibilities for even more immersive motorsports coverage — an essential step toward fully digitally connected race cars.
The new infrastructure enables the reliable transmission of high-resolution video signals directly from the race cars, with robust data rates even at top speed. All 21 DTM cars are equipped with onboard cameras, and six of them also feature additional action cameras for spectacular perspectives. In the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany, 24 different camera angles are integrated into the production, offering viewers entirely new perspectives on the racing action. The architecture was designed for scalability from the outset and provides the technological foundation for additional camera angles, higher data volumes, and future production requirements. Riedel’s DIVA+ infrastructure (Data, Intercom, Video, and Audio) forms the technical foundation for on-site production near the track.
“With Easy5G, we’re bringing private 5G into live operations for an international racing series for the first time — and this is just the beginning,” said Lutz Rathmann, CEO Managed Technology, Riedel Communications. “This isn’t just a one-off solution; it’s a future-proof platform for professional live productions.”
The dedicated Private 5G network operates at a bandwidth of 100 MHz and achieves uplink data rates of up to 140 Mbit/s. Efficient spectrum utilization enables high overall network capacity with comparatively low bandwidth and ensures reliable processing of growing data volumes. At the same time, the topography-optimized network design requires only four to seven antenna locations, depending on the track’s characteristics, thereby reducing the infrastructure requirements along the racetrack.
A key factor in the project’s success was the close collaboration between the DTM, TV Skyline, and Riedel. Early on, the partners shared a vision not only to leverage the potential of private cellular networks under real racing conditions but also to develop a permanently efficient production solution based on this technology.
“As the DTM’s TV production partner and technical service provider, we are constantly working to innovate and further develop our product. We have identified a limitation in the area of onboard cameras, which we plan to resolve in the future using private 5G technology,” said Wolfgang Reeh, CEO TV Skyline.
“With our continued development of Private 5G, we are laying the digital foundation for the next generation of DTM production: scalable, data-driven, flexible, and independent. With this technology and the ability to show spectacular onboard footage of all participants in every race, the DTM is setting a new standard. This gives us the foundation for new content formats and innovative fan experiences, thereby creating opportunities for sustainable new business models in motorsports,” said Claudia Wagner, DTM Managing Director.
